“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.”
Lk 1:38
Mary surrenders everything to the Lord. She surrendered her will to God’s will in Nazareth. “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done unto me according to your word.”
That is her abiding basic attitude. And so she teaches us to pray. Not to want to impose our will and our desires on God – as important, as comprehensible as they may be for us – but to take them to him and leave it up to him what he will do. From Mary we learn helping kindness, but also humility and generosity, to accept God’s will and to trust him, to believe that his answer, whatever it may be, is what is truly good for us.
